If you are a listner of GoGoエイブ会話 maybe you heard that I recently broke my smartphone. (>_<)
Since then, I have realized how much I was using it everyday.
When smartphones first became popular, I saw many people looking at their screen all the time, and I thought that I didn’t want to be like them. Like a zombie!
However, when the Great Earthquake of East Japan hit on 11/3/11, the area I live in was badly damaged. I couldn’t use my cell phone at all. One of my friends had a smartphone, and he could use it for maps, news, and to communicate with friends and family - even when regular cell phones were not working. His phone helped us a lot in the days and weeks after the earthquake.
After that, I decided to get a smartphone. It had so many new functions, and games (and podcasts!) – I was amazed! It was so convenient to use, and it cost about the same as a regular phone. After only a few weeks, I became a zombie too... 🙁
Now, for the first time in 5 years, I don’t have a smartphone. At first it felt strange to be "disconnected", but now (after 6 days) it feels kind of good! I feel a little more free than before.
I think not having a smartphone makes you pay more attention to the things and people around you in the real world. I will continue for a few weeks without one, and maybe in the future I will try to have a "no phone day" once in awhile.
